Bala Lake Railway - 2018 Special Events

Steam Gala - 16th, 17th and 18th June

Our annual steam gala has moved this year to tie in with the Ffestiniog Railway Hunslet 125 event taking place in Porthmadog between the 22nd and 25th June.

Our theme this year will be the Penrhyn Quarry, with three visiting locomotives, a busy timetable of passenger and demonstration freight trains, and lots more besides.

Our visiting Penrhyn Quarry locomotives will be:

  • Hunslet "Gwynedd" Works No. 316 built in 1883 and a sister locomotive to or resident "Winifred" visiting from Bressingham Steam Museum & Gardens
  • Hunslet "Hugh Napier" Works No. 855 built in 1904 and owned by the National Trust visiting from the Ffestiniog Railway
  • Avonside "Marchlyn" Works No. 2067 built in 1933 visiting from the Statfold Barn Railway

This year's gala will feature:

  • Up to 8 engines in steam
  • Frequent departures
  • Demonstration goods trains
  • Double-headed trains
  • Signal box and engine shed at Llanuwchllyn open
  • Miniature railway and models
  • 16mm model railway
  • Society Stands
  • Ivo Peters' Bentley
  • Free vintage bus service connecting Bala station to the town (Not Monday) (We recommend you park in Bala and catch the free bus service to the station as there will be limited parking available at Bala and Llanuwchllyn stations)
  • Special train on Sunday only at 6:45 from Llanuwchllyn triple-headed by the three Penrhyn Hunslets - available free to Rover ticket holders
  • Cavalcade of 8 steam locos from Dolfawr Bank to Llanuwchllyn on Saturday evening
  • Opportunity to ride in Penrhyn Quarrymen's coaches on Monday - available to Rover ticket holders only
  • Plus lots more! 

We will be running our two train Pink timetable on Saturday and Sunday, then our Blue timetable on the Monday

There will be an additional passenger train each day departing Llanuwchllyn at 9.25 am

An evening train will run on Sunday departing Llanuwchllyn at 6.45 pm

On Monday we will also be running two Penrhyn Quarryman's trains using open Penrhyn Quarry coaches

Visiting Locomotives - 19th to 21st and 23rd, 24th June

Our special event continues during the week with visiting engines taking over our regular services, as all our resident engines will be going on holiday to the Ffestiniog Railway.

We currently have the following visiting locomotives scheduled to haul our trains:

  • Tuesday 19th June - "Gwynedd"
  • Wednesday 20th June - "Gwynedd"
  • Thursday 21st June - "Palmerston", visiting from the Ffestiniog Railway
  • Saturday 23rd June - "Palmerston"
  • Sunday 24th June - "Palmerston"

Additionally, "Marchlyn" will making an occasional guest appearance on service trains.

A day with Alice the Little Welsh Engine - 28th July

Come along and meet “Alice the Little Welsh Engine” from Pauline Hazelwood’s beautiful childrens' books.

 Pauline the author will be at Llanuwchllyn station reading some of the stories, demonstrating how she draws the characters and involving the children in activities as well as signing books.

Alice the Little Welsh Engine Activity Book

‘Alice’ will be giving rides at Llanuwchllyn station in the special Dinorwic Quarry carriage that was once used by royal visitors and shunting slate wagons just like she did in the quarry.

‘Alice’ will also be double-heading the last train of the day, which departs Llanuwchllyn at 3:55pm.

Activities start at 10:30am and finish at 3:45pm.

Normal train fares apply for rides - with all additional activities included.

Alice the Little Welsh Engine

Our Blue timetable with trains departing Llanuwchllyn at 11:00am, 12:45pm, 2:20pm and 3:55pm will be in operation.

Barbeque Specials - August 2nd, 9th & 16th

A very pleasant way to spend the evening on a return journey by steam departing Llanuwchllyn at 6:15pm.

Stop for a barbeque at Llangower and watch the sun going down across the lake.

Pre-booking is required.

Join us for an evening outing by steam train along the full length of the railway, with an extended stop by the lake on the return journey to enjoy a fresh burger or a hot dog.

Mini Steam Gala - 25th, 26th and 27th August

Our home fleet of engines will be taking part in a mini steam gala with an intensive timetable and a chance to have a go yourself with our 'Driver for a Fiver'.

Halloween Trains - October 27th & 31st

Be Prepared to be Scared!!!

We are running these very popular trains again this Halloween.

Dare you ride the ghostly train to the witches coven?

Will your train make it through to the end of the line or will one of the ghosts or spectres force it to turn back?

There's only one way to find out, join us for an evening of storytelling and ghoulish fun.

This event is only mildly scary and is suitable for the whole family.

Our Halloween Trains will depart from Llanuwchllyn at 5.15 and 6.30, please note that it is not possible to board these trains at any other station.

Santa's Annual Visit - December 8th & 9th

The Bala Lake Railway is pleased to announce that Santa Claus has accepted our invitation to visit Llanuwchllyn on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th December 2018.

Trains will be hauled by two of our steam locomotives, suitably decorated. All trains will depart from Llanuwchllyn Station on a journey down the line to Santa’s grotto where the children will meet Santa and receive a gift.
