Miniature Railway

Situated on the former platform 2 in Llanuwchllyn, the first phase of our dual gauge 5" + 7.25" gauge miniature railway was opened on 23rd August 2025, the first day of the August Steam Gala. Passengers can access it via the foot crossing by the water tower for a short out and back ride. We have a three way point at the end where passengers embark giving us two sidings and a loading spur for bringing in locomotives and stock using a 2' gauge flat wagon.

The current operating line is approximately 190'/58m long on the southern end of platform 2. The plan is to extend the line past the former waiting shelter (now the company office) so that it runs the full length of platform 2, approx 400'/122m, with a point at the far end to provide two terminus roads and a shed spur on the south side of the waiting shelter where resident and visiting locos can be securely stored.

The intention is to operate the miniature railway on all special event days and some other operating days when volunteers are available. However due to the 100% volunteer operation, we cannot guarantee operating dates.

Construction of the miniature railway has been funded by individual volunteers and the Bala Lake Railway Society which purchased the track.

Visiting engines are welcome, please email tim.williams@bala-lake-railway.co.uk to enquire.
