We called on our way down to Aberystwyth. i brought 2 lemon puddings to take home from the cafe .. have to say it was the best sponge i have had in years... The train ride was good too all be it a wet day. Everyone we met were so lovely. Would definitely recommend it on a better weather day 🙂🙂

Fantastic afternoon out. The station at Llanuwchllyn is well set up with a little cafe, clean toilets and a very interesting free heritage centre. The heritage centre is an engine shed with lots of interesting pieces and information, plus some children's play things, well worth having a look around. The train ride to Bala is fantastic. We sat on an open carriage to get the full experience of sooty smoke and the scenery around. The train goes at a pleasant pace and the guide book is packed full of useful information about the journey, the engines and the railway. Well worth the £3 price tag. The views across the lake are superb. The staff are very helpful and extremely friendly. They are happy to share their knowledge and answer questions. At Llanuwchllyn you can go into the original, and still working, signal box. Great to see. We were also lucky to see a very young enthusiast with his steam engine who explained to us some technical details about his engine and evem let us sound the whistle. Lovely lad. Would definitely recommend a trip on the Bala Railway.

Really enjoyable little railway and a great experience for the kids. We visited the Bala Lake Railway while staying in the area and both kids really enjoyed it. The steam train itself was a big part of the attraction for them, especially the loud whistle and the bursts of steam. It’s a proper little steam train and just makes the journey feel that bit more special. The scenery along the route is lovely too. You get some great views across Bala Lake, while the other side looks out over the surrounding countryside and farmland, with cattle, sheep and plenty of open space. It’s not something that takes up a whole day, but it’s a really nice way to see some of the surrounding area and something different to do while visiting Bala. The kids particularly enjoyed the train and were excited every time it blew its whistle. Definitely worth doing if you’re in the Bala area, especially with children

Small railway track ideal for kids who wants to see engine and smokes... Goes through a small lake. The station has toilet facilities and small shop to get snakes and buy toy trains. We travelled around 2 hours to take this train ride which is not worth it. If your nearby or en route you can take it. Booking in advance is needed as all other train rides were fully booked during the school holidays (August end).

We had a wonderful experience at Bala Lake Railway. The train journey was relaxing, with beautiful views of Bala Lake, the surrounding countryside and mountains. The traditional narrow-gauge railway made it especially enjoyable for the children. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and everything was well organised. It’s a lovely way to enjoy the scenery and spend a few hours with family while exploring North Wales. A memorable family experience and definitely worth visiting if you’re around Bala or Eryri. Highly recommended!

Train station is a short work from Bala or the Bala Lake water sports centre. Advisable to buy tickets through the website in advance, there are also conductors who arrive with the train and take card payments. Dogs were also allowed to ride the train

Lovely heritage railway, with some beautiful scenery. Staff very helpful and friendly and very knowledgeable. They were fantastic assisting me board in my wheelchair and booking was easy too. Station has accessible facilities and nothing seemed 'too much of a bother'. Would love to return again, when I'm next in beautiful Wales. Thankyou for making the day a great experience for me and my fellow companions.

Truly one of the most nostalgic heritage railways in the united kingdom, for whom I myself had the pleasure in visiting this uniquely appealing narrow-gauge railway attraction, back in June of 2024, With a length of over 4 miles of narrow-gauge train track... roaming the shore of the lovely idyllic(ally) scenic lake behind it's name, as well as it's nature, from llanuwchllyn en-route to pen-y-bont via llangower, The bala lake railway, is truly a fellow one-of-a-kind narrow-gauge tourist railway, home to some of the most historically characterful narrow-gauge locomotives (and rolling stock) some of which once worked in the long sicne dried up quarrying industries in wales, The BLR... aims to hopefully extend across the river dee en-route to the town of whom the welsh narrow-gauge heritage railway long to reach thus serve, someday, I do hope to revisit this beautifully characterful narrow-gauge railway in-person, someday... especially to the one & only llanuwchllyn rluy station of whom home to one of the last surviving ex-great western double-twist lever frame equipped signal boxes... still in working order, even in the name of preservation. As well as llanuwchllyn, I also like llangower, another firm favourite station name of mine, such cleverly terrific names for stations once again serving their respective home destinations out there in the wonderful west of the border (wales). I also recommend the narrow-gauge bala lake railway, along with any other fellow heritage railway attraction that I've also visited too. Tip-TOP.... 50 out of 50.

What a wonderful place with fabulous people running things. We decided to have a walk at Bala and saw the railway sign. We decided to go and have a look and I was thrilled with what met us. A cute railway line and a couple of covered seating areas but not much else but it didn't matter it was the feeling and the nostalgia. We booked on my phone and as we are OAPs had a reduction. The little steam train is beautiful and fabulously turned out and maintained. The volunteers are so passionate and want to answer all your questions and we never once felt like they were too busy. We had a brilliant ride to Llanuwchllyn stopping of at a small station with a peppel beach on the side of the lake on the way. When we arrived at Llanuwchllyn we went straight into the tiny cafe to get a drink. The queue was out of the door, luckily we were second in the line. The gentleman serving was brilliant, he had his grandson helping him in the kitchen and they were doing a great job. He was doing the job of 5 people and was doing a fine job. The food we saw being brought out looked lovely and people were happy to wait 20 minutes for their food. *(to however is in charge of the cafe, please can the guy and his grandson have some desperately needed help?*) After our tea which was very good we walked down to the museum which is a good walk away so leave plenty of time to get there and back. The ride back to Bala was lovely and it was a beautiful day which made all the difference. All in all a fabulous day. After the train ride we walked along the brilliantly made and maintained footpath into Bala.

Not for us unfortunately. Very pricey for what it is and what you get to see. 2 adults 1 child £37.50. 25 mins each way. Nothing to see at either end. Views of the lake are very restricted, maybe 2 minutes along the whole route. The train from Carrog to Llangollen is much better.

Pleasant afternoon trip in an open train carriage for about an hour, round trip. Bit 'pricey' at £16 per adult but pretty much the going rate for these small railways around UK. Definitely recommend though.

A lovely little train line between Bala and Llanuwchllyn asking the edge of Lake Bala. You can get single or return, with free parking at Llanuwchllyn station, where there is also a heritage centre with lots of locomotives, artifacts and displays about the train history in the area, which helped pass a good 20 minutes before the train left. The cafe is well-stocked, even having a good selection of fresh gluten-free cakes. The cafe staff and drivers are all lovely! We chose to walk from Bala to Llanuwchllyn, about 5.5 miles, which takes a good 3 hours at a steady pace, but gets lovely views of Lake Bala, and rewarded ourselves with a cream tea and rode the train back, which took about 30 minutes! Bear in mind that they use diesel engines [edit: they ARE actually all steam!] which can be a bit smokey and smelly! Go to the back to avoid it or stay at the front for the full experience. This was during summer. When we booked online (the day before) there were dozens of seats available but on the day it was pretty much full so I recommend you book ahead.

Cannot fault the whole experience. We took our 11 month old son to do the train ride, his first time. All of the staff were exceptionally friendly and our son absolutely loved it. A special thank you to David, the manager who we got chatting to and even took 5 minutes to give us a quick Welsh lesson after we mentioned we were trying to learn the language. We will definitely be back!

Visited with my family on Friday 10th July. We'd pre booked our tickets and drove to the Llanuwchllyn station to start our journey. There was plenty of parking and an excellent shop with cafe and toilets at the station. It looked like reasonably priced food and drinks were available. A scenic and peaceful ride down one side of Lake Bala awaits. The only sounds were those from the engine and rails - which I like! You can buy tickets for dogs, ours were made to feel just as welcome as we were. Some of our group were late arriving but rearranging their trip was handled quickly and efficiently. I spoke to the engine driver, the conductor, the station manager and the lady in the cafe. They were all friendly, helpful and very welcoming. The customer service just couldn't have been better. Thank you to you all for making our visit so relaxed and enjoyable. We'd like to go again for sure!

Enjoyable return trip beside the lake on the railway to Bala and back. Dog friendly too. But unfortunately not a great deal to see and had hoped to see more of the lake travelling along. On arrival at Bala a lovely but good walk in to town. They are hoping to extend the line into town which would be great for the less mobile. Lovely to have the band playing on our return trip raising money for the extended works.

We went to this wonderful station today and it really was very special. That staff and volunteers were very accommodating & friendly. Wife likes going on the little trains. So went from Pystyll Rhaedar falls... Passed Llangynog where we stayed at the New Inn. ( Landlord.. Dai ) Onto Bala and caught the last train. 11.15... 13.15.... 15.15 ( last one ) Dog loved it. Head outta window on my lap .... She's pretty heavy now.

Was recommended by a local business nearby that we should try this. We went to the station and a helpful employee showed us how to buy the tickets online saving us a quid each. Really interesting experience and was nice to sit back and watch the scenery.

Had a lovely train ride the guard was very helpful. But when we got back we went into the café and as we had our old dogs in buggy with us we were told rather rudely to go right to the back of the café. I couldn't get the buggy to the back so we sat and had a very quick cuppa then left. There loss as we were going to have lunch there. But we moved on and had lunch elsewhere.

The station at Bala is literally a bus shelter. The nearest parking is 15 minutes walk away. The train travels very slowly and in summer when the trees are in full leaf you won't see much of the lake. When you get to the terminus there is a lot to see a d beautifully restored station building with lots of parking and a nice camp site. Start your journey here.

What a great group of volunteers at this railway. Lady in shop was very helpful & polite & took out drink/food order so we could take it on the train. We were asked if we'd like to go into the signal box by one volunteer who explained the diagram of how the points worked & allowed my other half to set the levers/points. He was also the ticket man & cleaner of carriages. Please donate if you visit.

Visited yesterday. Parking is free and we were directed to a spot by a couple of lovely gentlemen who gave us awarm welcome. There was a little fundraising event on with stalls including one from The Wren Project, and the local WI too amongst others. We were 3 adults and one child and our return ticket for the train was £54 but you can choose what time you come back, so we had a couple of hours in Bala. The views were lovely and the steam train ride was a delight. Definitely worth a visit.

Purchased tickets for a family of four for a full return trip, after waiting and approaching a member of staff about some details on the lake stop our family was told we’d be refused to be let off at the first stop, an EARLIER stop than what we’d purchased. This was communicated so poorly by staff that could barely give eye contact and offered no solution just “ you can’t do that” needless to say on a extremely warm day with towels in tow and swimsuits on ready for a day at the lake we found a hidden gem of a spot from sheer luck.

Nice mini train ride with the family today. The staff were nice and friendly. It's a shame that the view of the lake was obstructed by trees for quite a lot of the 25mins journey. But I still recommend it.

Always like a trip on a light railway so thought we would come to bala whilst holidaying in North Wales. You can book your tickets online or the nice people can sell you one when the train arrives...the time table for the train is online or on the notice board before you wait for the train. We parked in town and walked to the platform its about a 20min walk, but I think you can park a bit nearer, lovely views of the lakes as you sit on train, you can pay return journey too...then on our return we did the lakeside walk back into bala as we had the dogs with us, yes they too can travel on the train. You can get refreshments at the other station too. We'll worth a trip 😁

Excellent experience with the wonderful heritage small guage steam train. Carriages were spacious enough for the two of us plus our German Shepherd. Scenic route by the lakeside to Bala. Would recommend the short walk into Bala and returning at least a couple of hours later to give yourself browsing time in the charming town of Bala. Warm and welcoming staff and many warm and friendly volunteers. Would recommend looking at the heritage museum, cafe and shop on site.

Delightful narrow gauge railway with beautifully restored steam engine to accomplish the 10 mile approx return journey.Llanuwchllyn Station well preserved. I wish them all the very best for their extension into Bala town as this would increase patronage and bring extra business into the town.

Start your journey at Llanuwchllyn Station as there is no parking at the Bala end of the line. You can walk into Bala and book a later train.Good cafe,shop and toilet facilities at the station. Book tickets in advance ,easier for guard to check tickets on his tablet. Pleasant journey alongside Bala Lake. Carriages are opensided or enclosed,take your pick. Sit on the left for the best view of the lake. Enjoy.

Everywhere you go in Wales the websites and tourist information are terrible. My experience here has not changed. Wales is a beautiful country but they need to improve a lot to make it more attractive to the tourists. The staff does not know what their own website contains so the information on the website does not match what staff tells you. Very disappointing!!! I don’t find the website secure either. The cafe does not look inviting and the shop is sad! I’m sure improving both will make it more attractive but so far I am very disappointed.

Stellar and stunning Railway attraction in North Wales and one of the most beautiful and picturesque railway journeys in Wales. The railway journey last for approx. 30 minutes between Bala and Llanuwchllyn with a stop at Llangower along the route and there are various times throughout the day between the destinations mentioned and there are various timetables throughout the seasons when the trains operate and these are Orange, Pink and Blue and best advice is to check the website for the relevant timetable prior to booking tickets for your railway journey. The journey itself is spectacular and amazing where you can take in the Picturesque Mountain Vistas of the Snowdonia (Eryi) National Park and also the even more amazing views of Bala Lake (Llyn Tegid) itself and on the railway journey you can stop at Llangower where you can relax right by the Lake and also enjoy walks close to it. At the Bala end of the railway there is some brief information displays about the history of the railway and also the future of extending the railway route right into Bala Town itself, which is quite an exciting and intriguing read and at the Bala end of the Railway Line you can enjoy relaxing walk around the Town Centre and shops and also enjoy further views of the Lake which offers some lovely panoramic views of the Mountains in the backdrop which is beautifully picturesque. At Llanuwchllyn, which is the main area for the Railway there is a cafe and shop and also the Heritage Centre where there is a series of information displays about how the railway started and Welsh Slate Industry and these displays are really informative and make for a great enthralling read. The Heritage Centre showcases some really good interesting artefacts such as The Triassic Locomotive which is in immaculate and there is railway trucks and carriages which look great. On your railway journey you can enjoy on a series of excellent steam locomotives and these could be 'Winifred', 'Alice', ' Maid Marian' & ' George B' and out of these 'Alice' & ' Maid Marian' are the stand out due to their great dazzling colours and condition but also they are great flagships of the place and synonymous with the attraction. The rolling stock of all of the steam locomotives are at Llanuwchllyn Station and there are some information displays about the history of them outside the station and there is an information displays about the history of the station, which is very interesting. The cafe sells a range of food and drink at reasonable affordable prices and the shop has a lovely range of souvenirs at very reasonable prices. Overall this is a marvellous and wonderful place to visit and makes for a very relaxing and outstanding day out to enjoy one of Wales' great train journeys. Definitely well worth a visit whilst in North Wales.

A pleasant day, partly cloudy and with some light rain turning heavy later that day 🌧 The Bala Lake Railway is a narrow-gauge railway about four and a half miles long. The steam train 🚂 takes you on a very scenic route, out and back, along the east of Bala Lake. It takes around one hour. There is a cafe at the station and a free car park 🚗. Well worth a visit. Thursday 08th August 2024.

Had a lovely trip on the train to and from Bala. The staff could not have been more helpful, especially with getting the wheelchair on and off. Everything ran on time and when out of the wooded areas the views over the lake were wonderful. It was very busy so booking in advance had been a wise move. The only reason I can not give it 5 stars is that it is expensive, although I appreciate the cost of maintaining such a wonderful experience.

Quaint railway station. Taking a step back in time and informative. Great to see steam train. Volunteer happy to let you have photos taken on the footplate and they were very friendly. Watched them load with coal and water and couple up and drive off.

Didn't mean to take a trip on the railway, we were just having a look at the station, the train was in and nearly ready to go, so we decided to give it a go, so glad we did, it's a charming ride, only 3 stations about 4.5 miles in all, you travel through woodland and bracken with tantalising views of the lake, the pace is just right to see everything,then all of a sudden the lake bursts into full view, stunning. This happens a few times around the whole track. The staff and engine drivers and fireman are super friendly with all who want photos on the plate, and his polishing skills of 'Alice' is second to none, haha. All in all a brilliant experience.

It's a small scale, slow, steam train that travels to another town where there's not much to do, there's a cafe selling drink N food and a group of local enthusiasts that were friendly to chat to regarding the history, good for children and adults alike, we had a coffee and bite to eat and got on return journey to Bala, make sure you get times of travel, tickets can be bought in advance or through conductor on train

For £49 I was expecting much much more. It takes you around the lake but actually you are just going through trees and fields. The museum is tiny too and doesn’t leave alot for the imagination.

The line is relatively short, but a great experience for those who love steam railways. You can have a close-up sight of the engine and the staff are welcoming and informative. The ride is a little bumpy and trees have grown up to obscure some of the views, but our group enjoyed the trip overall.

A lovely experience taking the little railway along the lake. Friendly conductor and lots of fun for the dog, family and kids. Prebooked tickets online, plenty of space in the little carriages. Visited Bala for an hour or two between trains and it worked out perfectly.

However, my recent excursion was tarnished by an unfortunate incident regarding ticket transactions. Upon tendering £40 for tickets priced at £35, the conductor cited a lack of change and was unable to provide the £5 in change owed. Initially understanding, we accepted the situation. Yet, mere moments later, we observed the conductor effortlessly dispensing £15 in change to another passenger, highlighting a disconcerting inconsistency in service. Despite this blemish, the steam train journey itself proved delightful. Passengers reveled in the nostalgic atmosphere, capturing timeless moments against the backdrop of picturesque landscapes. Families, in particular, found joy in the experience, fostering lasting memories amidst the rhythmic chug of the locomotive. Festiniog to Porthmadog was a great ride but can cost the earth £120 for 2 adults and 2 children. (Dogs are welcome). We did later find out if you apply it's £34 per year for adults to ride the heritage railways so look into that. Unfortunately porthmadog was torrential rain when we arrived. It was a great trip overall and I enjoyed it we got to see other steam trains some truly original designs like duel ended with a single boiler very clever. We did also do Bala around the lake which was shorter but very nice

This is going to sound a strange review. It’s a wonderful little train but on the day we travelled the train broke down on the return trip to Bala. The staff were amazing. They took the train back to Llanuwchllyn and provided hot drinks for everyone plus ferried anyone who was parked at Bala back to their car. They could not do enough for us. We will definitely be going again with our grandchildren. Thank you to everyone both at the station and those who came out to the train.

Visited: 20/2/24 Bala Lake Railway staff were genuinely amazing, they were freindly, very knowledgeable and are were very keen to help and point out things of intrest to a railway enthusiast. The Llanuwchllyn station is well equipped and clean. A well stocked gift shop, clean toilets and most importantly a warm and welcoming cafe. Will re-visit!

Bit of a walk into Bala, although it is level. It'll be much better when they raise enough money to build a station in the town. The little museum at the first station at the other end of the line is interesting but not well signposted (we were the only ones who bothered to walk down to look in it during the time we were there). Very good use of modern technology for ticket checking.

A very nice steam train that runs the entire length of Llyn Tegid, Lake Bala. Small and well preserved by the Heritage Railway Association, this narrow gauge train takes a little more than 1 hour to go and return between its head stations. If you are by car, it is advisable to start the trip from Llanuwchllyn, for several reasons: there is parking at the station and it is free, it has a cafe where you can drink and eat something, a gift shop, bathrooms, and you can also see the preparations of the locomotive prior to the start of the trip. During the tour you can see the beautiful, green rolling landscapes of Snowdonia. It's worth it. It is advisable to buy tickets in advance on their website, as there is a discount for online purchases.

A well organised single track railway with a half way passing track. Tickets can be bought online and this proved to be an efficient system. The track is some 4.5 miles long and travels up the side of Bala lake. Views across the lake are wonderful although on the day we went it tipped with rain. The train still ran too. The engine, Alice, does not have a cab so in wet weather the driver and fireman get soaked. Credit it to them for their perseverance. At the station there is also a museum and tea shop. And if you are a modelling enthusiast the tea shop sells the complete Bachmann range of narrow gauge locos including Alice. All in N gauge. A pleasant afternoon even in the rain. Would be good to go again when weather is better.

The Bala Lake railway is a donation supported steam railway track that runs alongside Bala Lake with fabulous views. Rheilffordd Llyn Tegid, (Bala Lake Railway), final stop is at Llanuwchllyn Station which has refreshments, a shop, signal box and a small museum. A great way to spend a peaceful hour or so during the day.

First visit to the railway on Bank Holiday Monday, double bonus as it was a steam gala. Good value for money. Tickets you're recommended to you use the QR code at the station to book, doing this will save you money. All staff on the railway couldn't of done more. Answering all questions and just saying hello to us. Lovely journey along the lake. The museum is worth a look around, look forward to another visit

I recommend starting at the opposite end from bala. There's no where to park at bala and there nothing to do at the other end so it makes sense to start there!

Very Good. Friendly Volunteers . Nice Gentle jouney. We managed to get into front carrage behind Engine ( George 111) . Would have been better if it had been Alice Engine because granddaughter. But a Volunteer said, if he was around when we got back he would take us to see ,Alice in the Shed .

Waste of money. Drive. Or hire a canoe. So much is blocked by trees. Only about 10% of it is viewing the lake.

A beautiful scenic trip, Llanuwchllyn - bala railway just amazing. Staffs are soo friendly and welcoming! A nice cafe at rail station where you can find magnets and tiny train models and lot more.

Had a great time. Had actually made a mistake when booking tickets and booked for the day before we arrived. Staff were amazing and let us on. My children. Are big fans of 'Alice the little Welsh engine's and they let the boys stand on her foot plate. Excellent train line and lovely staff.

Such a quaint place with lovely staff who even let my children go at the front of the train and the service box. Staff were so kind in the cafe, they didn't force us to buy anything and said we were welcome to shelter from the rain. Beautiful views over Bala lake.

Such a nice little railway. It was very wet when I visited but the railway was still open. The museum was nice. Not much at Bala end, would be nice for some facilities.

Amazing railway journey with spectacular views of Lake Bala and the surrounding countryside. The staff are all very friendly and helpful, there's a shop and cafe at the station. You can book tickets in advance and even buy tickets for dogs too! There is a 20 minute walk when you get to Bala (Pen-Y-Bont station) but there are plans / work in progress to extend the line into the middle of Bala town. Well worth a visit!

Amazing little steam railway that takes you along the lake, passing a couple of stations, under bridges and finally coming to a stop and coming back again. Even though it was a bit of a rainy day, off and on, the experience was brilliant. Great for families or those that love the sights and smells of a steam ride. Expect to get covered in a bit of soot from the steam if you sit in the open windowed carriages, but all part of the experience!

Lovely railway run by great staff. Excellent day or half day out. Beautiful run alongside the lake. Reasonable prices. Great cafe and railway/gift shop. 10/10. I'm a "Gricer" so love it too bits and have been several times. My family also enjoy it everytime we visit. Lots too see. You can buy ticket in advance and if you do there is some discount on them but you can also buy tickets at the station.

Went from Llanuwchllyn to Bala. Scenic views along lake. But be prepared for a walk into Bala, took us about 20 mins, but we are 60 something.

Such a lovely railway experience that deserves the publicity. We did a round trip from Llanuwchllyn to Bala. It was £15 for an adult return (£14 if you buy online), we rocked up with about 5 minutes to spare and bought tickets from a volunteer on the platform with an iPad and a card machine. There's plenty of parking at that end, and the train returns straight away so it's convenient. We visited on a weekday in the May half term holiday and took the first train from Llanuwchllyn, there was plenty of space. We sat in the front carriage, which has a great view of the train. The sides are open so we definitely had a few soot marks by the time we got to Bala! We saw a Honey Buzzard in the trees as we went through a wooded section and saw the RAF training planes fly up the lake too. It was a beautifully scenic visit. We stayed on the train to return as we had already explored Bala. At Llanuwchllyn there are bathrooms, a shop and a cafe which is good for those doing the return journey from Bala. We also visited the heritage centre which has great information and some cool machines and carriages. I'm really glad I went and would recommend it for all the reasons above.

A great heritage railway, stunning scenery and a nice journey alongside the lake. At Bala stop you can walk a number of routes around the town and return on a later train or simply stay on board and return direct. Friendly helpful staff.

A great miniature railway, with a lovely original station, with a pleasant cafe and a good range of snacks. Very helpful and friendly staff, who appreciate and engage with questions about the railway. A picturesque and enjoyable rail journey along the lake side. Well worth a visit, and worth supporting this great railway and all of the volunteering staff.

Lovely place.. We stopped by and had food in the cafe before we boarded the train. Everyone was friendly and helpful. We paid to go there and back just for the ride. The kids complained about the soot and smoke (of course they did) it didn't bother me as its all part of the experience. Definitely would recommend visiting here. I loved it! 😄

We got the train into Bala and then back 2 hours later. There was plenty of free parking at the start (not Bala). The kids teenagers enjoyed it but grandad loved the little steam engine. The walk into Bala took a good 20-25 min (but we have a slow walker or two) so we didn't have long in Bala. Fun couple of hours and there was a heritage walk around museum at the non Bala end (we didn't do it). It was quiet on the way out but fairly busy on the way back best to book ahead online.

Great little train journey the views of the lake were amazing we opted to walk back to Bala it's 1.5 hrs to do it, with a couple of steep hills. But worth it. The train carriage is cramped as I'm tall but so what it's not London to Birmingham

As a family, 2 adults and 2 teenagers, we enjoyed a lovely afternoon on the railway. We were camped next door to the station and loved seeing and hearing the trains each day. High recommend a visit and a journey and hope they raise the funds to extend the line into the main town.

We first went to this railway 20 years ago and it never disappoints. Very friendly railway and volunteers keen to tell you about the whole line. The cafe shop are so helpful with good items for sale including good food and ice creams. We were allowed into the shed workshop and also the signal box where an man was very helpful informing us about the signalling etc. A well kept real steam railway with great views of Bala as you travel along. Happy 50th anniversary to a great railway!

Small stream train run by volunteers that takes you along the lake between Llanuwchllyn and Bala. A scenic route enjoyed at a leisurely pace of a by gone era. We booked single trip tickets online using their very impressive website and walked back. On our return the cafe was approaching closing time but the two young ladies very cheerfully provided us with coffee and toasted sandwiches which were delicious and very welcome. Service with a smile. Very highly recommended for a gentle, nostalgic trip.

One of the many gems in North Wales. Its a great ride along the edge of Lake Bala with some lovely views. We went from the Bala station at the other end is a magnificent, beautiful village, well worth a visit, also a lovely friendly pub called the Eagle. There is a cafe, shop, and facilities which were fab.

Absolutely wonderful and worth every penny! The lovely volunteers that run this were lush and super friendly. The train driver let my son who has autism have a photo in the train driver place and gave him his hat to wear. What a stunningly beautiful place 💖💖💖💖

Seats uncomfortable, but worth every penny. Relaxing views of Bala lake and greenery. Our kids loved it and were able to see everything safely out the windows and doors. Also very disabled friendly,

Lovely train ride along the lake. The pub in the village at end of the line is lovely but does not accept dogs inside but plenty of seating outside The cafe on the station is dog friendly with lovely staff The stop half way is a lovely spot for a picnic but no facilities

Fantastic little trip. Keep in mind that the station furthest from Bala, Llanuwchllyn, is the main terminus with facilities like parking, loos, snacks and gifts. The station closest to Bala, called Bala of course, is just a halt with nothing there really, not even parking.

Fantastic experience. Nice little train ride. The southerly station has a coffee shop and toilets etc. but not a lot else in the village. The Bala end has no facilities but it’s only a 10m walk to the village centre if you get your timings right.

We visited Bala Lake and we went on the train we got the return it was well worth it. There is a cafe at the station and you can return on another train if you want to explore or you can go back on the train you were on. The people running the train are doing a great job as the train runs alongside Bala Lake there are plans to expand it.We visited again 18/02/25 it was a lovely day we booked online and it is well worth doing a lovely journey alongside Bala Lake we went in the signal box and a lovely gentleman took the time to explain how the signals worked many years ago.We went in the open carriage February is not quite the time to do it but we enjoyed our day.

Lovely "Santa Express" train ride, warm mince pie and coffee in cafe, along with mulled wine on the train, children had a gift from Father Christmas. Snowman and elves helped everyone to get seated. Great Christmas music made this a lovely family day out.

We took our 2 boys on the mince pie special train and had a lovely time, the station looked very festive and the mince pies were lovely and warm. The train stopped at the other station and Santa came and saw each child at the window with a box of chocolates. My only criticism would be that I would have liked to see more decoration inside the train, although I suppose old steam trains probably don't come wired up ready for Christmas lights! I booked an evening timeslot so we could see the lights at their best, but between stations there was very little to see in the dark, so in hindsight daylight hours would probably be better as you'd be able to see the lake! Overall a lovely experience, both children (nearly 2 and nearly 9) had a wonderful time and we will almost definitely book again next year :)

Bala Lake Railway is a joy to ride. Easy parking at Llanuwchllyn. Nice café serving sandwiches and snacks. Friendly staff. The railway is well looked after by the mostly volunteer staff. Well done to you all. A wonderful afternoon out.

Nice little place, friendly staff and cafe. Very good camp site next to the station. Easy walk to the local pub and restaurant. All made for a very enjoyable couple of days motorcycling around North Wales.
